He dragged himself across the camp into the nursery and curled up in Bravelight's nest. He fumbled around in the bloody moss and uncovered there little rock.... Clay. He rested his head down, pressing his cheek against Clay's smooth black surface. His eyes flickered toward Tabbyfur's nest, where his kits suckled, but quickly looked away and closed his eyes.

So Talonclaw and Snowowl just finished burying Talonclaw's mate. Bravelight That's why his paws are all muddy. And he's still got blood on his fur from before... He hasn't bothered to clean if off. Poor guy is so buried in his grief he's hardly responding to anybody.
